They require a variety of images taken of artworks using differeing light sources as this type of photographic imaging allows for analysis & a deeper understanding of the nature of the painting's construction. It can indicate if a painting has been overpainted or altered in some way. Show where underdrawing is non apparrent to the naked eye and even if a signature has been added or altered..

The ultraviolet image below indictes not only  where modifications and repars took place on this oil painting but also that the signature, top right, is an added signature not by the artist.

Photograpic enhancement techniques can also help in identifying

previously erased signatures.
