The Authentication and Investigations into the Legitimacy of the art of the Group of Seven and Algonquin School.

Groupe Canadien des sept - Experts dans l'authentification de l'art

The Freemanart Consultancy's vast experience and international expertise investigating Canadian fine art, now nears forty three years.

Four decades have passed in which we have been professionally conducting and directing both academic and forensic investigations into the Dominion's art and paintings claimed to be by her most famous artists, the Group of Seven for clients. Not only in Canada, for their paintings turn up all over the globe.

Though Canada's history is but brief in relation to the rest of the world, some of her most famous artists, collectively known as the Group of Seven; or the Algonquin School, were a group of important and influential Canadian landscape painters who shaped Canadian art history. Working in the main in Ontario from about 1920 to 1933.

The original members of the Group of Seven were the Canadian artists: Franklin Carmichael (1890–1945), Lawren Harris (1885–1970), Dr. A. Y. Jackson (1882–1974), Frank Johnston (1888–1949), Arthur Lismer (1885–1969), J. E. H. MacDonald (1873–1932) and Frederick Varley (1881–1969).

Later added members included, A. J. Casson (1898–1992) joined in 1926; Edwin Holgate (1892–1977) in 1930 and LeMoine FitzGerald (1890–1956) in 1932.

There were two other artists associated with the Group of Seven; Tom Thomson (1877–1917) and Emily Carr (1871–1945). But Thomson died before the name Group of 7 originated, but he clearly was the most formidable influence on the other artists.

Principally, our function when serving our clients, is operating as a unique international fine art consultancy specialising in art authentication issues, and this has fallen into neatly defined professional actions, responsibilities, services and categories:

  • Authentication: Investigations towards establishing an internationally accepted and fully recognised authentication of a work of art. Including those paintings and works of art with a signatorial claim, belief or a well evidenced or earlier qualification of legitimacy and authenticity. Along with those without.
[Fully international, academic, archival and forensic applications and investigations.]

  • Attribution: Identifying and confirming an anonymous artist, studio or workshop from which an unsigned and thus, unqualified work of art originated. One not formerly known or previously identified.

  • Revision Re-examining & investigating an erstwhile, previously ascribed historical artist's attribution which is incorrect. Otherwise doubted, or has been formally challenged.

  • Confirmation: Conducting detailed investigative research and the full investigation of the provenance, lineage and history of ownership of a work of art.

  • Scrutiny: Identifying deliberate fakes & forgeries and determining those works which are studio or later student copies, or previously misrepresented and wrongful attributions.

  • Prosecution: Investigating alleged art fraud, fakes and forged works and assisting those prosecuting the fact.  Be that legal, civil or criminally.

  • Attention: Conducting all art related due diligence studies and duty of care enquiries. Including prepurchase or brokerage scrutiny and matters related to instilling confidence in future family distribution.

A huge upsurge in recent years of the value of Canadian art sold both at auction and in galleries in Canada and across the world is clearly evident.

It isn't surprising then that there has been an equal, if not greater occurrence of Canadian art forgery and art fraud attempts and indeed criminal successes in the fake art market in recent times.

With so many emulators of the Group of Seven, it is easy to see why many secondary Group of Seven paintings painted by their followers in a similar style, have suddenly developed a brand 'new' signature. This makes the painting seem a fine prospect at auction and on prime internet sites for art collectors and traders alike.

Our workload therefore expands weekly in authenticating or rebuffing art works claiming to be by members of the Canadian Group of Seven and indeed their followers.

Artist who were part of the Group of Seven's close circle such as Ernest Conyers Barker and Joachim George Gauthier are prime targets for the fakers adding signatures. Some of their works are very similar indeed. Fortunately the leading expert on Conyers Barker's oeuvres happens to be our Executive Director and an expert on Canadian art.
